In 2017 Nigeria joined the Global Prevention Coalition as part of global efforts to accelerate HIV prevention. The coalition seeks to ensure accountability for delivering prevention services at scale in order to achieve the targets of the 2016 Political Declaration on Ending AIDS, including a 75% reduction in HIV infections towards fewer than 500 000 infections by 2020, and to ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

Nigeria developed a 2-year costed Nation Prevention Plan to address the agreed priorities. As part of the aspiration of the global coalition to maintain a global accountability process with scorecards that will reflect progress against national targets, civil society organizations have participated in the annual development of scorecards to track yearly progress.
