Overview
Climate change has had an impact on communities in Niger, Benue, and Nasarawa States, Nigeria. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events are affecting livelihoods, food security, and human well-being. The region’s rural communities, who depend heavily on agriculture and natural resources, are particularly vulnerable to these changes.
Women and girls in these communities are disproportionately affected by climate change. They face challenges such as reduced access to water and sanitation, decreased agricultural productivity and food insecurity, and increased vulnerability to gender-based violence and exploitation. Furthermore, women and girls have limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, which exacerbates their vulnerability to climate change impacts.
The AACJ Project aims to promote climate justice and support communities in Niger, Benue, and Nasarawa States to adapt to the impacts of climate change. The project recognises the importance of amplifying the voices and stories of women and girls, who are often the most vulnerable to climate change impacts. By documenting local narratives, the AACJ Project seeks to inform project interventions and policy recommendations with local perspectives and experiences and contribute to a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of climate change impacts and adaptation strategies in the region.
