Sustaining Menstrual Health as a Pillar of Nigeria's Health and Development Agenda
As Nigeria engages at the 58th Commission on Population and Development (CPD58), this position statement—developed by a coalition of Nigerian civil society organizations and youth advocates—urges our government to elevate menstrual health as a national priority and champion it at the global level.
Menstrual health is not just a health issue—it is a matter of education, dignity, gender equality, and national development. Despite notable progress in reproductive health and youth education (such as Nigeria’s Family Life and HIV Education curriculum), menstrual health remains under-prioritized in policy and investment. This gap has real consequences, especially for school-aged girls and women in underserved communities.
This position paper:
-
Outlines how menstrual health impacts health, education, and the economy
-
Urges the Nigerian delegation to CPD58 to push for explicit language on menstrual health
-
Highlights opportunities for leadership under the Renewed Hope Agenda
-
Recognizes the role of ministries, government officials, and civil society in advancing progress
-
Calls for sustainable funding and coordinated policy action
This is a moment for Nigeria to lead.
By endorsing menstrual health as a central pillar of our health and gender equality efforts, we can set a bold precedent for other nations while addressing long-standing gaps at home.
