Education as a Vaccine (EVA) and Advocates for Youth, USA created the ‘Expanding Youth-Friendly Health Services for Young People in Akwanga Project’ (YFS project) in order to improve the reproductive health outcomes of young people in Akwanga, Nassarawa State.
The strategies the project employed include community mobilization, strategic behavior change communication, capacity building, and referrals. The project ran from June 2010 till 2012 and at the moment, EVA still partners with 3 Healthcare providers in the community; Primary Healthcare Centre, Wamba Road, Cheto Clinic and Peace Clinic to provide Youth Friendly Health Services for young people, as a sustainability strategy.
The project trained 30 youth as peer educators, who in turn reached 2464 young people through structured group sessions and face-to-face sessions. Between March to May 2012, 3152 visits were made to the facility by young people representing a significant increase when compared to the same period in 2010.
