The Out of School Youth Access to Sexual Health Education and Economic Strengthening (OASES) project was created to expand the use of new media and ICT to increase sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in Niger State.
This two-year project will teach sexual and reproductive health and life skills to out-of-school youth in Bakin Iku, Bakin Kasuwa, Madalla, and Angwan Dawaki all in Suleja L.G.A. The project will use the Learning About Living e-learning platform, as well as using peer education to reach out to youth.
Education as a Vaccine has won the bid for out-of-school youth access to sexual health education and economic strengthening project in Niger State. Young people in this state are vulnerable. An assessment done by EVA showed very low use of modern contraceptive methods in Niger State, and exposure to family planning messages was very low.
Early sexual debut, early marriage, and childbearing were high in Niger State. Early sexual debut together with low safe sex practices increased the young people’s vulnerabilities and risks of HIV/AIDS, as well as other sexually transmitted infections (STI), unplanned/unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions.
The OASES project is the result of a two-year grant from the FORD foundation. The project is currently at its inception stages, and this section will be updated as work progresses.
