Duration: 2007 – Present

Family Life and HIV/AIDS Education (FLHE) aims to provide young people with knowledge, positive attitudes and skills to foster behavioral change and thus reduce their risk to HIV/AIDS and other reproductive complications. However, this curriculum is not being implemented and young people must get information from alternative sources.  The implementation of the curriculum is the responsibility of educational authorities, schools and teachers in the states.  However, several states including Benue, Nassarawa and the Federal Capital Territory are not compliant.  Research reveals that significant progress has been made by the three states to start implementing the curriculum, but the following factors are standing in the way:

  • Lack of political commitment to allocate financial resources to support the implementation of the curriculum
  • Inadequate materials and teaching aids for teachers to use in classroom delivery;
  • Insufficient technical support for training teachers and limited capacity for monitoring classroom delivery and impact

EVA received funding from American Jewish World Services to support the government in implementing the curriculum through training support and technical assistance in Monitoring and Evaluation. The advocacy campaign also aimed at increasing stakeholder support for the FLHE curriculum. Due to our significant experience in the implementation of the reproductive health curriculum in schools, our strong partnership with educational authorities in the FCT and advocacy work on FLHE program, we were also selected by OneWorld UK as one of nine partners for the eFLHE component of their Learning about Living project.

The Learning about Living (LAL) project is a new Nigerian initiative that uses Information Communication Technology (ICT) for social learning on sensitive sexuality education issues.  The project uses graphics and cartoon animation to bring FLHE to life, making it fun for the students/learners but also an easy-to-use tool for the teachers. EVA is responsible for the coordination of all project activities in the FCT and Benue state.  This includes giving technical input on the development of the LAL computer program, training teachers and learners on using LAL and monitoring its implementation.  EVA also serves as a member of the technical steering committee of the project, providing input on the overall management and sustainability of the project on a national level.
