FCT

The Federal Capital Territory was carved out of four surrounding states and named the capital of Nigeria in 1976. With a high population growth of 22% annually, rapid infrastructure growth and migration characterizes the territory.  Although city plans envisioned an optimal population of 3 million for the territory, the currently FCT has an estimated population of 6.7 million.  Although 70% of the capital territory is rural, the metropolis is highly cosmopolitan with an even representation of ethnic and religious groups.  The city is made-up of six area councils, which serve as administrative units.  Unlike other regions in the country, the FCT is not managed by a governor but a member (minister) of the President cabinet. The 2003 National survey reported a prevalence rate of 8.4% for the FCT.
